Cultural Resource Management
Cultural Resource Management is a combination of
desk-based research and archaeological field
survey. This process may identify, record and map
known or previously unrecorded archaeological
monuments within rural settings and isolated
landscapes. These surveys can be used to evaluate
the extent of the archaeological resource by
compiling an inventory of sites and monuments,
recommending conservation strategies and further
investigation of selected sites.
Upland Surveys
These surveys are undertaken within
rugged and remote environments such as
river valleys, National Parks and
mountainous regions. The archaeological
resource is widespread within these
settings, but largely unknown and mostly
unrecorded. Many areas have not been
adequately mapped since the earliest
Ordnance Survey.
Earthsound surveyors perform walk-over
surveys using a systematic methodology to
better understand upland monuments and
landscapes. Once upstanding archaeology or
cultural features have been identified,
they are recorded in detail, both in terms
of physical dimensions, environment and
landscape context.

Monuments such as animal pens, banks,
cairns, ditches, field boundaries, hut
groups, mineral extraction sites, sheep
dips, trackways and ritual complexes
including standing stones and stone
circles are often identified as previously
unknown areas of activity, achieving
comprehensive mapping of the upstanding
archaeological remains.
Surveys in upland Wales have
demonstrated that highly successful (and
cost effective) archaeological assessments
can map areas formerly unexplored by
archaeologists: Over two years
archaeological surveys in upland Wales
have identified 418 sites and monuments,
95% of which were previously unknown,
completely re-mapping the archaeological
resource.

Cultural Surveys
Ireland's graveyards contain a large
amount of local historical and
archaeological information. Data such as
grave distribution, date and headstone
details are not held in the public domain.
Earthsound offer a graveyard recording
service which produces a comprehensive
surveying, mapping and database resource
for graves, headstones and tomb
remains.
A database of graves and religious
buildings can be collected and presented
in a comprehensive format, which is
available for future research. The
database can include grave location,
orientation, style and inscription
details, and building size, location and
preservation state.

Survey Requirements
If you would like to contact us to discuss your
requirements so that we can develop a project plan
and quotation, it would be useful to have the
following information:
- Size and shape of survey area
- Purpose of survey
- Survey location
- Known archaeology in the survey area
- Ground conditions - pasture, upland,
mountainous, overgrown etc
- Other useful information such as a map of
the survey area
